Ted Venema, PhD

Audiologist and Consultant

Ted Venema is an Audiologist who has a BA in Philosophy at Calvin College in 1977, and an MA in Audiology at Western Washington University in 1988. After three years as a clinical Audiologist at The Canadian Hearing Society in Toronto, he completed a PhD in Audiology at the University of Oklahoma in 1993. He was an Assistant Professor at Auburn University in Alabama and also at Western University in Onterrible. He was a corporate Audiologist at Unitron, a hearing aid manufacturer based in Kitchener Ontario, where he conducted field trials and gave presentations, domestically and abroad. He taught in the Hearing Instrument Specialist (HIS) program at George Brown College in Toronto, and in 2006 he initiated, developed and implemented the HIS program at Conestoga College in Kitchener Ontario. He moved to Victoria BC in 2013, where he was part owner of a clinical Audiology practice with NexGen Hearing. Ted is the author of a small textbook, Compression for Clinicians. At the present time, he continues to give presentations on various topics of hearing, hearing loss and hearing aids. As of September 2015, Ted has been and teaching on a part time basis with the online HIS program at Ozarks Technical Community College in Springfield Missouri.

Antonio Calderon, MD, BC-HIS

As a member of the International Hearing Society's Board of Governors the responsibility actively worked with the Society's chapters in the states of Arizona, Louisiana, Arkansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas attending their state’s annual conventions.  This means Dr. Calderon has his finger on the pulse of the hearing healthcare profession in these states and beyond.

Jeffrey Szmanda

Administrator, Hearing Test Prep™ 

Jeff is president and founder of Each Ear, LLC, and inventor of the internationally-patented and award-winning Gruv Button Technology™.  Prior to founding Each Ear, LLC, he amassed more than 30 years of experience in venture development and entrepreneurial management.  Jeff is a winner of the first place award in the State of Wisconsin’s Governor’s New Product Award Competition and a prestigious technical design award from Johns Hopkins University.  Gruv Button Technology™ has been awarded the 2022 Today's Caregiver Friendly Award

 

While practicing as a Hearing Care Professional, fitting hearing aids for 12 years, he developed Educational Discussion Events, a community outreach program covering 6 relatable hearing loss topics.  For his dedication to hearing aid users, in 2021, he received the Acta Non Verba Award, Presented for Excellence from Elite Hearing Centers of America.

 

Jeff helped create Basic Hearing Aid Training for Caregivers to help family and facility caregivers understand hearing aid utilization and care.

 

Recently, Jeff launched Hearing Test Prep to help potential hearing aid users prepare for their first hearing test and perceive a "Feeling of Partnership" with their Hearing Care Professional.

Margaret Vanderwarn

MSE, Advocate for People with Physical and Functional Limitations

Margaret is an Assistant Professor at St. Cloud State University (SCSU), teaching undergraduate and graduate courses to future special education teachers.  She is passionate about her work. 

   

Margaret is the recipient of both the University Award for Excellence in Leadership from SCSU and the Educational Shareholder Award from An Investment in Youth District 279 Foundation.  She has presented technical papers and been a speaker at several state, national, and international conferences and conventions. 

   

Margaret has been a life-long advocate for equity in education and access to what life can offer in the spirit of the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990.
