Why Hearing Aids Are So Important

Your Brain

Hearing happens in your brain.  Sound waves carry acoustic energy into the ear canal, which is converted to mechanical energy at the eardrum, then to hydraulic energy in the inner ear, then to electrical energy as it continues along the nerve bundle and is finally converted to chemical energy in the brain – and understanding takes place.  Here is an interesting explanatory video on the subject.

Untreated Hearing Loss Has Consequences

We want to reduce loneliness and isolation and to protect the health of our brains by treating hearing loss.  Studies have linked untreated hearing loss to several other effects, as well, including reduced alertness, irritability, and depression.  Read more here.

One study by Johns Hopkins Medicine and the National Institute on Aging, in 2011, found that adults with hearing loss are “significantly more likely to develop dementia” over time than those who retain their hearing.  Click here for more information.
